LOVE OUR NEIGHBORS: EMERGENCY FOOD DRIVE

We are so grateful to our church family and the community for providing food for our neighbors during difficult times. The reinstatement of SNAP benefits will alleviate some of the food scarcity experienced but there are many other factors still affecting many people. The lack of steady paychecks due to the Government shutdown, the rising costs of groceries and other goods, the holiday season and more continue to put a financial strain on everyone, affecting some more than others. As such, we are continuing to collect food and personal supplies for those in need through the holidays.

In response to recent federal disruptions and rising food-security concerns in the region, Collierville United Methodist Church (CUMC) is mobilizing its community to serve as a collection hub for non-perishable food items and household essentials, partnering with the Church of the Incarnation in Collierville to distribute goods to families in need.

CUMC invites all area residents, members of affiliated organizations, and local businesses to participate. Donations may be dropped off at the Poplar campus Entrance 4 (454 W. Poplar Ave) from 8am – 8pm, Monday through Thursday and from 9am – 1pm on Sundays.

CUMC will serve as a collection site only and will not function as a distribution center. All donations will be forwarded to the Church of the Incarnation, in Collierville, which operates Monday through Friday, 9am –1pm, serving residents of both Shelby and Fayette counties. CUMC is also accepting monetary donations for food purchases by selecting CUMC Food Bank from the dropdown: www.colliervilleumc.info/giving. Items may also be purchased from Amazon for delivery to the church by using this link: www.colliervilleumc.info/amazon.

The church’s program will run through the holiday season (Thanksgiving into the New Year) pending restoration of SNAP benefits and government employee pay.

HOW THE DRIVE WORKS:

  • Donors may drop off items at the church’s Poplar campus at Entrance 4: Mon-Thurs, 8am-8pm and Sunday, 9am – 1pm
  • Weekly deliveries will move items to the Church of the Incarnation;
  • Acceptable items include canned fruit, vegetables, meats, soups, cereals, long-life boxed milk, diapers, household essentials such as toilet paper and paper towels; please, no perishables.

STUMPED ON WHAT TO DONATE?

Here are some helpful guidelines and resources to help you figure out how to make the most out of what you can donate:

OF SPECIAL NOTE: Many children who receive assistance find themselves at home alone due to their parent(s)/guardian(s) working multiple jobs or odd hours so consider donating items that are easy for children to prepare: individual cereal bowls, easy mac, pull top soups, pull top meals, etc.

Non-Perishables: Shelf-stable foods – Try to donate pull tab top cans as not everyone has access to can openers

  • Canned Vegetables and Fruits: Ensure they are low in sugar and sodium.
  • Canned Proteins: Tuna, chicken, and beans are excellent protein sources.
  • Pasta and Rice: Versatile staples that can be used in various meals.
  • Nut Butters: Peanut butter and almond butter are nutritious and shelf-stable.

Personal Care Items: Beyond Just Food Donations – many people facing food insecurity are also
facing the issue of having to choose between food and other personal care items.

  • Toiletries: Soap, shampoo, toothpaste, and toothbrushes.
  • Feminine Hygiene Products: Tampons and sanitary pads.
  • Baby Supplies: Diapers, baby wipes, and baby formula.
  • Household Cleaning Products: Detergents and disinfectants.

Special Dietary Needs: Donating for Diverse Dietary Requirements

  • Gluten-Free Products: Gluten-free pasta, bread, and snacks.
  • Dairy-Free Alternatives: Plant-based milk and cheese.
  • Low-Sugar Items: Suitable for individuals with diabetes.
  • Kosher and Halal Foods: Respecting religious dietary laws.
